Should I choose a specialization in graphic design?

Graphic design encompasses many things … Illustration, logo, brand / identity Packages, The Design, Typography. But to choose one as my career feels so specific that it would limit my career choices. Is it still necessary choosing a specialty? I am doing an internship next spring GD with the military (civilian type Department of Defense), and according to Director of graphic have a wide range of responsibilities, then a well-balanced list of skills is preferred in this situation. More companies are GD / Departments like this one?
