How much profit does a logo “maker”, not designer, make?

Im starting my own business! However I dont know how to “make” a logo. But I did create the design. I told them how I wanted it, and they did it. Now, since I want it printed and for it to be sold on merchandise, how much do I give them from the profit price? Or what’s a fair amount? Im so lost on this! I checked online and I cant find anything . Can someone help me? Also, dont I need to get the logo and designs, that I DESIGNED, but did not make, patent? legal? Im really unsure, I wouldnt want anyone to steal my work 🙁
It’s for a bakery!!

thanks to anyone who can help me out!

I create logos for $150 flat. If your designer did not specify an amount upfront, shame on them. A fair amount is basically on you to decide. Like one answerer said, I would speak with them, but I would let them know how much you are willing to pay them for their services.

When you create a logo (the same as making a logo) you own the copyright to that logo as long as it is fixed to a tangible medium like a flyer or paper. Trademarks arise out of USE, like placing it on merchandise for sale or business cards and letterhead. Only then does it become your trademark. You will need to visit the Patent and Trademark office to get more information on how to REGISTER the copyright and trademark. www.uspto.gov.

You cannot necessarily register certain components that make up a logo, unless your brand is extremely well-known (like the arches for McDonalds or the swoosh for Nike). Your initial drawings are merely ideas. You can still try to register those if you wish, but the most valuable thing is the actual finished logo because that is what you will use to establish the IDENTITY of your business/product.

Doing a poor man’s copyright registration (mailing it to yourself) will only protect you in state level courts. All interpretations of the copyright act must be handled in Federal court, and you must have your stuff registered to even be seen! Keep that in mind.
