Is 3d modeling and animation relevant to Graphic Design and Visual Communication Design studies?

Not really. I assume you’re talking about indergraduate college- a Graphic Design/ Visual Communication program will probably touch on 3D animation- maybe 3D Studio Max and a flash animation course- it varies, but it will mostly be about graphic design and studying images and other media, trying to explain the context and subtext of an image.
Graphic design programs are good if you want to be a graphic designer, but the Visual Communication or Visual Media or whatever spin the college puts on it programs are pretty much a waste of time and money from my experience.
If you want to be an animator, you need a dedicated animation program, many are umbrellaed under a Film/Television program rather than a Media/ Communications.
